It's not good to let your health go. Sometimes, depending on what you do for a living, sometimes it can be a struggle though. I can't speak for all professions. I can speak for my own though. Trucking. Being away from home as much as I am. And to top that off, being an owner operator, the health insurance I have available to me isn't worth the money that it cost me.
What do I mean, you ask?
Well, when I was a company driver, the health insurance available to us was awesome! Here's the interesting part, or at least, I think it's interesting at least. When you're employed as a w2 employee, you have much better health insurance options. However, when you are an independent contractor, you have to go off the market place. Yes the plans on the market place are decent, but they are also very expensive unless you don't make that much and can get what they call income tax credit.
When I started with my current carrier, I signed up for health insurance through their contractor health insurance company they recommend. I had this coverage for probably the 6 months or so, and then we scheduled a checkup for our 2 girls. It was a basic checkup, just basically checking how they are doing. I wasn't there, as I was on the road, but I don't believe they did anything as extensive as blood work. You'd think, with insurance, the visits shouldn't have cost that much.
A month or two later we got a bill in the mail from both their appointments. Can you guess how much we were billed? $190 each. Insurance paid like $15 for each kid, and then we got billed for the rest. I was floored. When having insurance deducted from my weekly settlements, I was paying like $180 per week. I decided whats the point in paying so much money for insurance when it barely covered anything.
So, for a while now, I have not had coverage and hense have not been to a doctor myself. I've also gained a lot of weight the past 2 years. No matter what I do, whether I limit calories, and walk 10k steps, did that for like 2 months and still didn't lose any weight. I gave up for a while, doing small changes like unsweetened tea and avoiding fries, and still my weight climbed. For years in my marriage, I kept my diet pretty much the same, and my weight stayed pretty consistent. I was like 220 lbs for a while. It climbed up over a few years to around 245. Stayed there for a while, and over the past 2 years has gone up a little bit here, a little bit there. This past year I went from 280 to probably 315. I've also had other health issues the past few months that have finally gotten me to look into getting into a doctor.
Last week I made a change. I started drinking water 100%. I did lemonade once last week, but otherwise it was 100% water. I'd say I drank between a half gallon and a gallon of water every day. I've never peed so much in my life! LOL! When I used to drink sweet tea or sodas or lemonade tea, etc, I always had enough to drink throughout the day but I'm guessing I was just packing it on because I never had to pee that much.
Then last week, literally day 2, it was like the flood gates opened. Every couple hours I swear I must have gone about half a gallon. Funny thing was I'm positive I peed about 3 times more than I actually drank that day. Then last Friday, I went ahead and researched low testosterone testing centers here near Nashville. I figured, that I might have to have multiple types of tests done for things like thyroid, testosterone, etc, but obviously figured testing my testosterone levels would be a good place to start.
So I went online, found a Low T center about 6 miles away from where I live. Scheduled the appointment for 8:30 this morning, figuring I'd get back home yesterday. Went through the testing this morning, blood drawn, etc, and found out my levels are extremely low and could definitely be causing a lot of the issues I'm having medically. I received my first shot and am officially in a Testosterone therapy program. It's an extra $250 a month, but it covers all the appointments, shots, tests, etc.
So, in conclusion, I'm glad I'm on the Testosterone, and I will continue to drink mainly water, and hopefully within the next month or so I'll start to feel better, lose weight, and improve my overall health. Me drinking water I believe has definitely made a difference. I'm not as overheated as I usually am. It's not an easy change, but nobody ever said that it would be.
On that note, sorry if I seemed like I jumped around a bit on this entry. I'm actually home on my day off, hanging out with the family, and watching a movie, and so I'm kind of multi-tasking. LOL. I hope that you are all having a good day, and I'll talk to you next time.
